Ranma 1/2 is getting a remake after all:

In 2014 I wrote a well-liked post titled 'Why Ranma 1/2 never got a remake,' so go figure 10 years later Ranma gets a remake.  Nevertheless, the reasons for why it didn't receive a remake until now stands.  I have low enthusiasm about this announcement, or rather pre-announcement, since they haven't actually told us what they plan to do with the series.

But based on what we've seen with Berserk, Spice and Wolf and Kenshin, we can assume Ranma 1/2 is going to cover the same old material as before without ever getting to any of the new, uncovered material from the original anime.  It's going to be another pointless remake like I was just complaining about Japan was doing too much of a couple days ago.

The Boy and the Heron may as well have been a remake too.  It was a hodgepodge of old ideas from previous Miyazaki films -- the kodamas from Mononoke Hime, getting Spirited Away to a malevolent and strange world, everything collapsing like in Laputa, meeting supernatural creatures in the countryside like in Totoro, World War II like in The Wind Rises, etc.  There wasn't anything interesting or new about the story, but lots of new annoyances -- like magic constantly changing the gameboard so nobody's decisions ever mattered, and there being no relation between cause and effect.  I can't believe anyone liked this movie.  I'm a huge Miyazaki fan and have liked all his movies, but this was a pile of garbage.  So if even I can't like it, who could?  The only thing you can say in favor of the film is it had a high animation budget and it was possible to watch all the way to the end.

Isekai Suicide Squad, on the other hand, has been quite good so far.  Harley Quinn is very pretty and very athletic in her anime form as well.  I've already watched the first three episodes.

The KonoSuba light novels have been decent so far.  If I enjoy them all the way to the end the author will make my good books hall of fame, but that will take quite a while.  It's good to have something productive to do until the Olympics.
