Fall 2022 Anime First Impressions: Part 1

My Master Doesn't have a Tail:  There's nothing particularly offensive about this show, I just don't care about rakugo.  Plays and operas are way better, if you're going to focus on old art forms.  But honestly video games and anime are infinitely better than those, so a series like New Game or Bakuman would trump a series about plays or operas.  There's no sense in watching a series about such an inferior product.  Fail.

Koukyuu no Karasu:  If all it took for an anime to be good was for the heroine to be pretty this series would pass with flying colors.  Unfortunately it's lacking in other aspects.  Why does only one person in the whole world have magical powers?  What law of physics would lead to such a result?  Why is she rude to people who have done nothing to antagonize her?  Why does she live in solitude when that can't possibly be any fun despite having magic powers and looks that could easily make her quite popular?  And lastly, why does this series stink of the mystery genre?  Odds are she isn't a consort but a detective, and every new episode she'll be tasked to solve a new crime or mystery or occult phenomena blah blah.  What do I care if A-kun poisoned Y-chan?  They're all nameless faces to me, so whether the mystery is solved or not means nothing to me.  I don't care about anyone involved.  And I never will care, because every new mystery will be about new complete strangers.  This is why mystery is such a crappy genre.  Fail.

Yuusha Party wo Tsuihou Sareta Beast Tamer:  Like the recently ended Kakkou no Iinazuke, this series has a lucky guy surrounded by cute romantic interests, only this time they're all beastkin.  Dragon girls, cat girls, fox girls and fairy girls.  Who doesn't like being surrounded by a potential harem of beastkin girls?  Unfortunately, the basic premise that there are sentient beings who a beast tamer can 'tame' and it somehow matters that they're 'tamed' instead of just cooperative of their own free will makes no sense.  At best this makes him a slaver.  Fail.

Noumin Kanrin:  An all-powerful guy refuses to use his strength to help anyone or at least impress a woman and thus get a wife and kids.  All he wants to do is farm.  Even if the world is in peril he'll abandon the world and keep farming.  Whatever.  Fail.

Gundam Witch of Mercury:  A nonsensical society has lots of abrasive personalities, in fact, nothing but abrasive personalities.  Every single person you meet is rude and violent.  Our stuttering heroine for some reason joins this society and instantly becomes the class president or whatever equivalent due to her brokenly strong Gundam.  For some reason this also means she's forced into a lesbian marriage with a rude violent thief.  Nothing makes sense and nothing fits together, it isn't worth following long enough for all this nonsense to be explained away.  Fail.

Shinmai Renkinjutsushi:  A girl works hard and studies hard to become an alchemist, succeeds, and starts a shop in the remote countryside.  It's a nice karmic tale of good behavior being rewarded, but is there anything else to it?  Anything more than that?  What exactly is enthralling about this pastoral tale?  What's unique about her life that demands storytelling attention?  Maybe the *point* of the story will show up next episode. . .Pass.

Shinobi no Ittoki:  Girls in pink underwear look good.  But yes, given that he was undergoing harsh ninja training all his life, I already saw it coming that she was a honeytrap, a classic female ninja technique.  The series didn't fail to live up to its theme, and indeed it was too good to be true.  After some nice animated fighting sequences it turns out the Iga and Koga ninja clans are at war (aren't they always?) even in this modern era.  The scion of the Iga clan, Ittoki, must now strive to stay alive and somehow bring peace and order to the ninja world.  Pass.

Futoku no Guild:  Humorously enough, the lewd scenes in this episode were less attractive than the ninja honeytrap which wasn't even trying to be lewd (more like trying to warn men to stay away from women so they don't end up like Tom Brady, screwed over for no reason because you're never good enough) in the previous series.  Since this boring and bland world has nothing else on offer, with not even an attempt to create a realistic setting or atmosphere, it ends up a complete waste of time.  Fail.

Do It Yourself:  A surprisingly good first episode.  Unfortunately, it still has the problem of being a story about hand made furniture, a subject about last on any list of priorities I'd ever make.  Furthermore, the art style is kinda funky, and it hurts to watch Serufu get hurt so often.  So despite this show's best efforts -- Fail.

Mushikaburi Hime:  A strikingly beautiful blond prince and blonde noblewoman, both with blue eyes, decide to get engaged.  Four years pass and they still haven't married, which leads to misunderstandings and tearful drama.  The girl is too passive to actually say her feelings to her fiancé or actually get married, so she simply swirls around in the vortexes of other people's decisions.  Hopefully as the story progresses she'll correct these character flaws.  For now she's a naïf who never harms anyone and that's already good enough.  Plus the kid from these two bloodlines would be amazing.  Pass.

Akiba Maid Sensou:  Some premises are too ridiculous.  The idea that there's an underground mafia war between maids in Akiba where dozens of maids are being shot down by other mild-mannered looking maids on a daily basis is one of those too ridiculous premises.  I don't think you could find that many bad-mannered girls in all of Japan, much less kill that many in a day.  Girls just aren't violent criminals.  It's not in their DNA.  It's stupid to pretend otherwise.  Fail.

Still to come for a part 2 of this post -- Legend of Mana, Bocchi the Rock, Fuufu Ijou, Chainsaw Man, Renai Flops and 4-nin wa Sorezure Uso.  Honestly I didn't expect much from these shows so three 'passes' is sufficient.  I'm deathly afraid Eminence in Shadow won't be good, and how that show turns out matters more to me than all these other first impressions combined.
