I've been waiting for this anime ever since I started reading the manga. It was clearly a masterpiece and now, with the first episode having aired, it can proudly join my top anime rankings, for now at the provisional placement of #200. I'll know better where to place it at the end of its run.
To make room I kicked out Rewrite, which I've been wanting to kick out for a long time now. Ever since I realized the anime had completely distorted and ruined the story in the visual novel, I've resented it. There was absolutely no reason to change anything, but they just randomly felt they had to. The filler anime had no value added compared to the already perfect visual novel, so it never deserved to be ranked in the first place.
Someday, Rewrite+ will come out, which includes the Harvest Festa sequel, and I'll re-read the real Rewrite, banishing all memories of the filler anime forever. Honzuki no Gekokujou is an important part of that healing process.
This brings 2019's total of great new anime up to 4, twice as much as 2018's. Who knows? Maybe there are more great anime waiting in the weeds. We'll only find out once all the fall anime has premiered. But it's nice to already have one in the bag.
When an anime that's just starting replaces an anime that's already finished, the total great anime episode count is bound to fall, but in this case it's not a big loss. Honzuki is slated at 14 episodes, and may get sequels in the future to increase that number, while Rewrite is over with only 24 episodes. In the long run it might actually increase the total count.
Either way, it doesn't look like the top anime rankings will surpass the crucial 9,000 barrier again until next year. One more thing to look forward to, I guess.
