Kaizoku Oujo: After two episodes I've got a bead on this series. It's a shoujo story, like Touken Ranbu, where a single girl for inscrutable reasons is the center of attention of seven different pretty boys each with their own charm point. So one guy is gruff and tough on her, the twins act like playful kids, one is helpful, one is skillful, etc. So whatever a girl viewer might be attracted to, there's a boy for that. One of the Pirate Princess' crew is actually an engineer girl (gotta plug that girls in science feminist angle!), but the overall picture is the same. Being a boy, I tend to hate this genre, but this one is better than average so I'll give it a whirl. Akatsuki no Yona is of this genre but actually worked, so maybe Kaizoku Oujo can manage something too. Pass.
That brings the summer season to an impressive 21 concurrent airing series worth watching:
Here's the good anime that's currently airing this season and is worth at least a try, in the order of how exciting each episode is week to week (not in the order of how good the series is overall, which would favor older/longer series too much):
1. Love Live! Superstar!!
2. Kanojo mo Kanojo
3. Edens Zero
4. Shiroi Suna no Aquatope
5. Tropical Rouge Precure
6. Magia Record S2
7. Boku no Hero Academia S5
8. Higurashi Sotsu
9. Seirei Gensouki
10. Heion Idaten
11. Slime Tensei S2
12. Genjitsu Shugi Yuusha
13. Kageki Shoujo
14. 100-man no Inochi
15. Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibouken Remake
16. Bokutachi no Remake
17. Deatte 5-byou de Battle
18. Re-main
19. Hamefura S2
20. Tsuki ga Michibiku Isekai Douchuu
21. Kaizoku Oujo
Add in One Pace and Dragon Ball Super Heroes which air irregularly and you've even got 23 series, which is near the record for a single season. I'm pleased as punch with this season. The only thing better than this would be new Bleach and Utawarerumono running simultaneously.
It took a long time for everything to debut, we're already halfway to the fall season. My complaint is with this coming fall season. The only assured great shows of next season are the continuations of Shiroi Suna no Aquatope, Tropical Rouge Precure and Yuuki Yuuna. Right now we have 7 great series airing so that's a huge dropoff.
There are some decent series planned to air this fall, but stuff like Luminous Witches and Kimetsu no Yaiba, which I assumed would be coming this fall, haven't been given an air date. I guess they were delayed for some reason or other. And without them there's not much to get hyped over.
This would be a good year to focus on football since fall anime isn't going to cut it. At least the summer anime season will escort us that far.
A budget filesize edition of Shingeki no Kyojin Final bluray is now available, so I'll use this for archival purposes. The filesize is smaller than the original airing version so it actually saves space.
