I always wanted a scene where Christopher interacted romantically with Elf, instead of merely mentioning her presence in passing, but I couldn't find the right time, place, and occasion for it, until now. Now I've inserted a truly apt passage in chapter 11 that fixes the plot hole of their missing romance:
* * *
My date with Emily was in the underutilized music room of the mansion, where she had promised to wow me with her overwhelming piano skills. Opening the door, I was overwhelmed for a different reason and promptly closed it again.
"No, wait, I wasn't trying to seduce you, I always play this way!" Elf wailed in anguish through the door. "Are you saying the date's over already?!"
* * *
To those who know Elf, this is hilarious because one could totally see it happening. Plus it hits on two points -- that Elf is clumsy and unfortunate in love -- weaknesses that only cutely offset her manifold strengths of talent, confidence and beauty. All in a mere two paragraphs. Now that's efficiency of action. The best book ever written has yet again been improved by my limitless wit.
