Fall Anime 2020 First Impressions: Part 1

Assault Lily Bouquet:  A promising start with cute, identifiable characters and a good enough budget to pull off daring action sequences.  Like Lapis ReLights or Uma Musume, this show seems to prefer quantity of characters over quality.  It'll probably end up 'good' but not 'great.'  Pass.

Tonikaku Cawaii:  I know from the manga that this story will start strong and then taper off into meaningless comedy.  The relationship progress is glacial from here on, so prepare to be frustrated.  On the other hand, Tsukasa is cute and Nasa is cool, so watching them is rather fun.  Pass.

Jujutsu Kaisen:  I wish things weren't so grotesque, but I guess I can't say that so long as I keep watching Made in Abyss.  The animation is amazing and the character designs are nice.  Another shonen action series never hurt anyone.  Pass.

King's Raid:  Borrowing from a lot of tropes, this classical fantasy series tries to add in some political maneuvering to spice things up.  It feels so uninspired compared to Goblin Slayer, but as routine fare it will do.  Pass.

Majo no Tabi Tabi:  What a beautiful anime.  The world is full of detail and color, you can almost see the berries bursting with life and every leaf on every tree glistening with dew.  What did they pay to make this?  Elaina certainly had an eventful childhood, but the plot structure of the story isn't confidence-building.  She'll wander around, meet someone, solve their problem, and move on every ep.  An episodic series going nowhere, basically a series of short stories with an unchanging protagonist to escort us through each scene.  With art this good, though, who needs plot?  Pass.

100-man no Inochi:  Another take on isekai, where you keep warping back and forth between it and the real world.  It's sufficiently brutal and humorous to keep my attention.  I certainly want to see how a 'farmer' class deals with such traditional problems as goblins and trolls.  It might get tiresome quick, or it might be funny every episode.  Only time can tell.  Pass.

Rail Romanesque:  A pointless short.  Skip.  Fail.

Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibouken (Remake):  I think this will be a solid series.  The Akira Toriyama art style is strong with this show.  It's based on a famous manga about a famous video game franchise.  How bad could it be?  But the childish low-stakes fights where no one dies whether they win or lose isn't very compelling.  I wish this were Kimetsu no Yaiba.  Now that's a serious shonen action.  Pass.

Iwa Kakeru:  I don't much like butch girls.  They look like freaks.  Plus rock climbing doesn't seem in the least interesting.  Adrenaline junkie garbage just like skiing.  Fail.

Munou na Nana:  The main character is a combination of a lot of other characters we've seen through the years, except lacking in any distinguishing virtues.  Totally unlikable.  The art style sucks too.  Fail.

Kami-tachi ni Hirowareta Otoko:  I know from the manga this is a great series, but it isn't clear from the opening and ending songs that the anime intends to follow the manga.  If it does, this will be a top ranked anime, but if it doesn't, I probably won't even watch it.  The first episode was properly canon but we'll just have to wait and see.  Pass.

Senyoku no Sigrdrifa:  A stale, overused plot and setting with stale, uninteresting characters.  We already have Strike Witches this season, why not leave it to them to pursue the plot they pioneered?  Fail.

There's still a lot of series yet to begin this fall season but this is already a sizable list.  So many 'passes'!  Like I predicted, the Fall season is spectacular.  Hopefully I can cover the remaining entries in a part 2.
