I've been keen to replace my lower ranking great anime for a long time. The problem has been nothing has been coming out recently that could justify replacing them. Suddenly the dam has broken. Starting with Kimetsu no Yaiba, 2019 is making great anime again.
After Kimetsu came Vinland Saga, and after Vinland saga comes Kanata no Astra. This series is fantastic. I had never heard of it until the anime started, but what a start. I don't know how great it will eventually be -- for now I've placed it in the placeholder position of 198th. What I do know is I'd rather watch Kanata no Astra than Gokukoku no Brynhildr, which it replaces.
Gokukoku is just like 12 Kingdoms -- a noble source work butchered by filler. Kanata no Astra doesn't seem to suffer from that problem, so it's very easy for the anime to overtake its competition.
Gokukoku no Brynhildr's anime barely ever follows the manga. A further complication is that the manga goes off the rails itself a little after where the anime ends, meaning that even if the anime had followed the manga eventually it would have ended up stupid too. There's no winning path for Gokukoku. Kanata no Astra has far higher potential. Not only has the anime done nothing wrong yet, the manga isn't even finished, so the story could be as good as our furthest imagination.
It's pretty fun watching 3 great new anime series in the same season. When was the last time that happened? There were only 2 great new anime series all last year. Plus Honzuki is slated to air this fall so soon we'll have a 4th great new series to cheer over. The rusty wheels are beginning to turn again. Have I mentioned this is the greatest year ever?
This lowers my total anime count yet further. Gokukoku was 14 episodes, while Kanata no Astra is only slated for 12. Oh well. Pretty Cure will make enough episodes to cover everyone else's losses, eventually. . .
My Music Hall of Fame also shrank two songs. 'It's the training' and 'Naruto's daily life' were deemed too silly to listen to 100 times. Their campy instruments and tunes eventually get on the nerves, even if they're cute originally. That still leaves a mighty host of 5,394 songs, still 12.2 days in continuous play length. In fact, I'm still well ahead in song count from where I started this year, so I can afford to keep cutting as much as I please.
It looks like all my potential sources of new good music -- Ares no Tenbin's ost, Tales of Arise's ost, Garbage's new album and Granblue Fantasy Relink's ost, are going to come out next year. But there's no rush. I don't need any new music while I'm still chewing on the 1,000 additions I already made from last year.
