What an amazing lineup of games Square Enix revealed at E3! War of the Visions is a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy Tactics. If it's even half as good it's twice as good as any other game around.
But that's not all. Also coming down the pipeline is an FF8 Remaster (which is really what I wanted for FF7, everything the same except better looking graphics, but apparently FF8 will be the beneficiary of that concept).
Then there's FF7 Remake. As usual it looks incredible, the one thing lacking in the original FF 7 (which looked like garbage.) But now we have extra details like the ability to freeze time while picking through a menu option what to do with your accumulated ATB. This brings the game closer in concept to the original turn based system which is always welcome. The music appears to be remixes of the original themes (I prefer the original version but it won't kill me to listen to the remixes while I play, the original versions are in my itunes music playlist anyway.) Also, unlike FF 15, all characters are playable and you can freely switch between which ones you control during battle.
All in all, three games were presented worth purchasing on the same day. What a show. The future of gaming is really looking bright, even though that's mainly due to remakes of games from the past.
Dragon Quest XI is fun and has good graphics to go along with its retro gameplay. My biggest complaint is how goofy the villagers and monsters look, which ruins the gravitas of every scene. The eyes of the heroines look awful too, like they're permanently cross-eyed. These artistic decisions, presumably made by Akira Toriyama, cast a pall over the whole product. I much prefer the intentionally cool and good looking style of Final Fantasy. But Dragon Quest XI has turn based, menu based combat, so I can't complain too much. If only there were an FF game, with FF style, FF music, and FF turn based, menu based combat. If only they would make that game anymore. . .
It could be called FF 7 Remake or something. . .
