Summer 2023 Anime First Impressions: Part 1

Jitsuha ore Saikyou:  This series has one redeeming feature, a cute imouto.  Nothing else about it looks promising, the concept is trite and overused and the main character is generic.  But I want to get to know the cute imouto better, and the second episode promises to be from her point of view, so onwards we go.  Pass.

Ayaka:  So there are these four boy magic users who fight evil spirits or whatever.  The setting is very well established, but there are no sympathetic characters, so it doesn't really matter what the setting or plot is, because I don't care what happens to these people.  I hope the evil spirits win and eat all four boys and the story ends.  Fail.

Chiisai Senpai:  This story reminds me a lot of 'Nagisa won't let me be invisible' except the girl who has a crush on the main boy is no longer attractive or fun to be around.  Her gigantic breasts look completely outsized for her small body, she has dumb mannerisms, and she's ridiculously dense when it comes to how she unintentionally flirts with the generic office worker main character.  Nagisa came off as really smart, but this girl comes off as really dumb.  It's like night and day.  Fail.

Yumemiru Danshi:  I understand the feelings of a guy who's rejected 100 times and gives up on a girl.  But I don't accept the girl's feelings of wanting the guy to continuously harass her so she can continuously reject him, getting that power trip of superiority all day every day.  Her ridiculous sense of privilege is the cause of all the show's problems.  Fail.

Okashi na Tensei:  The male character who was reincarnated with cheat powers and thus has no problems in life thinks only of making and eating sweets all day every day.  It's a boring situation and a boring, monomaniacal person.  Fail.

Suki na Ko ga Megane:  This series is full-cg, but admittedly very well done.  The characters looked very much like anime drawings, so if it were just that I could have forgiven the series.  After all, it looked better than BanG Dream, which is full-cg, and I rate BanG Dream a great anime.  But it wasn't just that.  The bigger problem is the story is about a loser guy who falls in love for the shallowest of reasons, because the girl sitting next to him in class is pretty.  He knows nothing else about her.  He then becomes flustered and helpless whenever any little thing happens between him and her, which turns him into a ludicrous loser.  It's okay to feel intense excitement when the girl you love looks at you or touches you, I'm happy for you, but you need to contain those feelings within yourself and continue handling the situation at hand in an efficient and helpful manner.  Freezing up and turning into an idiot is not good enough.  I expect more from men.  Fail.

Jidouhanbaiki:  A silly premise of reincarnating as a vendor machine instead of a slime or sword.  But the girl who picks him up is nice and pretty and he has a valued place in the community so all's well that ends well.  Pass.

Watashi no Shiawase no Kekkon:  A story set in Japan(?) where blondes with pink or blue eyes proliferate for some unknown reason, everyone is married by arrangement between parents instead of their own romantic inclinations, and life is still pre-industrial revolution.  The girl in question is a bastard and thus mistreated by her stepfamily, but all in all she ended up in a fortunate situation, married to a rich and comely guy, so she really shouldn't complain.  All's well that ends well.  Pass.

LasTame:  I don't understand the purpose of a series where the hero is reborn as the villain of a story, so all they have to do is not be villainous and there's no trouble and everyone lives happily ever after.  It's such a dumb concept.  But supposedly this is a good series and at least it has good artwork, so I'll give it a try.  Pass.

Jujutsu Kaisen S2:  The first season and movie of this series were decent, but this second season is miserable.  It's apparently not even about the cast that was introduced in Season 1, but is some giant flashback arc concerning their teacher's youth.  And during this time, apparently, everyone was an insufferable combination of smug and rude.  They talk down to everyone, don't help anyone in need, cause trouble, never apologize, etc.  I can't stand them.  This show is officially dropped.  Fail.

Rurouni Kenshin Remake:  This series is true to the manga, which is nice.  It's widescreen and high definition, which is cool.  But the voice acting and music are worse than the original -- the art style was more evocative in the original version too.  The original was also true to the manga, so I don't understand why this series exists.  If it had been about Enishi, or Hokkaido, something that hasn't been animated before, that would have been great, but what is the point of this show?  Rurouni Kenshin in widescreen can't be all bad, but it seems like a giant wasted opportunity.  It also appears that the new Spice and Wolf will just be reanimating the same stuff the old series already covered as well.  Why?  The original anime was beautiful and perfect.  Why on Earth would you feel the need to remake it instead of animate new sections of the very long and very good novels we haven't yet seen?  It's so stupid.  Pass.

Many more series have yet to debut this summer but they can be covered in a Part 2.
