Cheat Kusushi no Slow Life: What is the point of this show? The guy's life is already effectively over. From here on he'll just repeat what he did the day before and the day before that. He already has a girlfriend and a child, effectively. He already owns his own house and runs his own successful business. He's already done everything in life that needs doing. So what is left to talk about? There are no great threats looming over the horizon that only his power can prevent. He has no great ambitions left to fulfill. He doesn't even have a hobby. His life is over, which means the story is over. I have no idea why you would choose a viewpoint character of such abysmal dullness. Fail.
Tsuki ga Michibiku Isekai Douchuu: I've already read the manga for this series so I know it will be decent throughout. I didn't expect the budget to be so low, the animation even in the first episode is awful. But no biggie, even with a great budget the story would still only be mediocre, so it was probably right to skimp on the project. This is the same as every other isekai, the hero is granted an all-powerful cheat and uses it to curbstomp all enemies that come before him, of which there's an endless number. Pass.
Shiroi Suna no Aquatope: Never bet against P.A. Works. Virtually every series they've done recently is great. Kami-sama ni Natta Hi, Uma Musume, Kuromukuro, Shirobako, all the way back to Tari Tari, Angel Beats and Hanasaku Iroha. This is a 24 episode series by P.A. Works. Enough said. Okay but really, not much has happened so far but it's exactly the type of storytelling I like. On the first episode we get a feel for 2 and only 2 characters, and a sense of place in suburban Okinawa. This is exactly how stories should feel. You get immersed in a particular situation and get a real sense for your point of view character. You identify with them as you follow their line of thought. This time it's about two girls working at an aquarium, but it could just as easily have been a girl and a serval meeting in a safari park. Or a newlywed's life during World War II. The point is to have a real sense for the people and setting involved and connect to it by giving each person room and time to breathe. I need lots of great new long series to replace my short oav's and movies so hopefully P.A. Works will do it again. This pattern usually tends towards greatness. Pass.
Meikyuu Black Company: Everyone in the story is evil and nothing makes sense. Why can't an entire mine's worth of demonite support the hunger of one monster? Why would you fall in the red? Oh well. Pathetic. Fail.
D_Cide: This isn't an anime, it's full CG. And it has the same dumb plot as every other dumb series. A guy is randomly thrown into a world full of violent unthinking monsters and heroes with special powers who take them down. Use your power to preserve the peace of 21st century Japan and your regular school life. So old, so pointless, so empty. Fail.
Deatte Battle 5-byou: I don't like series where the heroes are robbed of all choices and placed into some sort of diabolical death game. The only one that's ever been good is Btooom! But Btooom! does exist, so I can't instantly dismiss the genre either. Deatte seems to be on the better side of the genre so I'll give it a shot. Pass.
There are still a few summer series yet to debut so I'll have to cover them in a part 3. So far so good though. This is already much better than the spring season.
