'The 100 Girlfriends who really, really, really, really, really love you' has been green-lit for an anime starting this year. This is one of my favorite manga currently running so of course it will also be a great anime once it starts airing. In keeping with my decision to immediately rank Sousou no Frieren, I've immediately added '100 Girlfriends' to my rankings as well. This kicks out Ghost in the Shell, which I've been warning is on the cutting block for some time now.
The problem with Ghost in the Shell is it's a cop show, where the overwhelming power and money of the state is brought to bear against lone individual criminals, who never stand a chance. This bullying is considered heroism, but everyone knows true heroes are the people who overthrow the state, not the ones who enforce it. In fact most of the criminals in Ghost in the Shell are trying to further some noble cause and it's the state that's in the wrong.
The other problem with Ghost in the Shell is it's mainly cg, with lots of crappy spinoffs. I only liked the first two animated seasons of the show which had very cute explorations of Tachikoma AI. I liked these robots more than any of the humans in the show. But a story cannot be maintained purely by cute robot pets. That's a pretty shaky foundation to be included in the greatest anime of all time.
'100 Girlfriends,' meanwhile, is a perfect mirror of my '100 Waifus' book, which happens to be the best book ever written, so it's a very solid foundation to reach my top anime rankings. I'm delighted to see society move in the same direction as me and get behind the idea of truly massive harems. Not only are many of the girls in this series cute, and their love for Rentarou touching, the author takes a smorgasbord approach to life and has the girls participating in every imaginable activity under the sun -- sports, idol dances, dates, world ending apocalypses, it's a comedy where everything goes. Such an imaginative, varied, creative story has never before been seen. And unlike my story where the 100 Waifus are lifted from other series, this author actually went and imagined an entire cast of 100 new girlfriends all by himself. (though technically we're only at the 23rd or so girlfriend as the series is still ongoing.) This story's ambition is on the galactic scale.
Sadly, this puts my great anime count back down to under 10,000, as Sousou no Frieren and 100 Kanojo haven't started airing yet, so contribute 0 episodes a piece to the total. But by the end of the year we'll be back over 10,000 so it's no big deal.
With Ghost in the Shell gone there's no need for it to have a representative in '100 Waifus' anymore, so I kicked out Motoko in favor of Framme as one of Christopher's daughters. Framme is a precious person to me so I'm really glad the book found room to add her. To put it this way, Fire Emblem Engage gave out three 'boots' special items that add +1 to your movement stat permanently. I gave those three boots out to Alear, Veyle and Framme (out of the 36 possible character choices available in the game). Alear and Veyle were already in my fictional character hall of fame, so Framme being added too is only right and just.
Framme is one of the prettiest girls of all time. She's short with nubile breasts, but slim and strong, a graceful martial artist who hits hard. She has an incredible fashion sense, with great color coordination, a cool beret, pink ribbons, a braid with intermixed pink dyed highlights and regular undyed hair, beautiful wide yellow eyes with pink eyeshadow framing them, there are so many little details to her clothes and style I could go on forever. The first impression she makes is so strong it's basically love at first sight.
She isn't just beautiful, though. She also has a great voice, a devoted heart, a bubbly positive personality, and the willingness to see things through, whether that's through embarrassment, danger or tedium. As a cheerleader she makes everyone else stronger and more optimistic and energized around her.
Compare that to Motoko's cold hearted killer mentality which seems totally bored with the world and contemptuous of everyone else around her and all their weaknesses and you can quickly see why Framme should take her place.
100 Kanojo was on my anime wishlist, so now that that wish has been granted I've replaced it for a wish for more Lucky Star. It seems fitting that one comedy manga wish should replace another.
Honestly I wondered if '100 Kanojo' would ever get an anime, considering its salacious theme. I hoped but I also doubted. This announcement is a huge windfall for anime and strengthens the top anime rankings by quite a lot. 100 Kanojo, like Sousou no Frieren, isn't some series that is going to stick around near #200 in my rankings, they're going to high, rarefied places. These two shows are going to make 2023 scintillate.
