This was a fun adventure, as you'd expect from Gun Gale Online. There wasn't actually much action because the entire book long the squad jam is covered in fog, so no one can see where anyone else is and fighting is impossible. What it did do, though, is separate all the cast from their usual partners and force them into unorthodox groups which adds to the excitement. What will happen now that nobody is in control of the situation?
It's a nice cliffhanger for next book.
Meanwhile, Japan defeated Germany and Spain, two soccer powerhouses, and ended up at the top of their group heading into the round of 16. What a fantastic accomplishment for Japanese soccer. Germany ended up out of the tournament, wondering what the hell happened. Germany has won more world cups than Japan has won games (okay, perhaps that's a little exaggerated but still), so this is pretty crazy. With Japan and the USA moving forward to the next round I'm pleased as punch. Honestly, I thought Japan's second goal shouldn't have happened because the ball went out of bounds before the cross and shot into the goal, but who am I to argue with the video replay which somehow decided it was a goal? I guess AI knows best.
Michigan really pounded Ohio State, not what I was expecting, which puts USC into pole position for the final playoff spot. It would be nice if the 4 best teams came from 4 different conferences, representing the entire USA.
The playoffs won't be limited to 4 conferences in the future though. Starting in 2024 it's going to be a 12 team playoff with at least 6 conference champions automatically participating. This will give everyone an equal fair shot into the playoff, including little teams from the Sun Belt or Mountain West or whatever conference. This is the dream I'd always envisioned, where the college football champion is decided on the playing field, not pundits or computer metrics. Anyone who has a valid argument for being #1, like having an undefeated record, will have their chance to prove it on the playing field. College Football is going to be perfected two years from now. But still, I'm liking how this playoff is shaping up this year. I even have TCU, a Texas team, to cheer for.
None Can Stand Before the Power of Instant Death is getting an anime, which is nice. It isn't what I wanted, though. '100 Girlfriends' is so much more deserving, what are they waiting for?
