The best musical albums:

Yasunori Nishiki put on a tour de force with Octopath Traveler, with 30 entrants from his soundtrack rating 5-star.  Does that make Octopath the greatest soundtrack of all time?  Nope!

Final Fantasy Tactics - 38

Chrono Trigger - 36

Chrono Cross - 35

Final Fantasy 8 - 34

Final Fantasy 7 - 34

Xenoblade Chronicles - 31

Final Fantasy 6 - 31

Octopath Traveler - 30

To be more precise I'd have to add in the points values of songs that didn't reach 5-star, but this metric works well enough.  Octopath is the 8th best source of music ever, which is still pretty amazing.  Final Fantasy Tactics is the supreme musical work, as well as the best game ever made, by a wide margin.  There aren't enough words of praise in the English language for the miracle that is FF Tactics.

The scariest thing is all these soundtracks other than Octopath (2018) and Xenoblade (2010-2022) came out in the same six year period, from 1994-2000.  There was more talent, more quality, more of what makes humanity special, in those six years than everything before or after put together.  Looking back it's hard to understand or describe what happened.  While I lived through it, I thought that was the norm, that music and video games were expected to be that good, and it would be weird if they weren't.  Twenty years later, now that I know each of these miracles is impossible to replicate, much less 7 of them in six years. . .it's flabbergasting.

Other great albums which nevertheless Octopath can be proud to have beaten:

Xenogears - 29

Record of Lodoss War - 25

Final Fantasy 10 - 24

Final Fantasy 5 - 24

Final Fantasy 9 - 23

Final Fantasy 12 - 20

Final Fantasy 4 - 19

Xenosaga - 19

Lunar - 19

Ogre Battle - 16

Fairy Tail - 15

Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced - 15

Little Busters! - 14

Da Capo - 14

Gettysburg - 14

Fire Emblem: Three Houses - 13

Fate/etc. - 11

Index/Railgun - 10
