I read volume 12 of Unlimited Fafnir in September of 2016. Five years later, almost September again, I finished reading volume 13.
My memories are obviously going to be a bit hazy about what exactly is going on. But my love for these characters hasn't changed even if I'm totally lost. I will pick up where I left off and just wish a happy ending for them all, that's all that matters now.
Why was there a five year gap between the two volumes? It couldn't be helped. Volume 13 wasn't translated until February of this year, and I only found out that it was translated today. Even if I'd somehow read it in February it would still be a five year gap. It's awful that the series was dropped so long. Traumatizing. But it's an equally blissful miracle that it was picked back up again. That's all that matters now. We can all see the ending.
From here it's a straight shot, the remaining three volumes are all translated and I fully intend to read them ASAP.
This volume focused on mai waifu Mitsuki, so of course it was great. Mitsuki like usual is a gambare-san, trying to do too much, sacrificing herself too much, and scarily effective because when she tries hard she's really good at it! Thankfully Yuu convinced her that he really did love her and always would (I agree! I'll always love Mitsuki too!), so her life was spared and now all they have to do is defeat a world ending bone dragon. I hope all of the next volume isn't some Goku vs. Freesia neverending fight sequence. All I want is more romance! This volume was perfect. Mitsuki and love confessions. I'll take what I can get from volume 14+, but this was already what I wanted.
With the knowledge that the next three volumes will also be great and will have an actual ending, I moved Unlimited Fafnir up to #1 in my value added light novels hall of fame. In a sense that's a great accomplishment, it means these were all extraordinary books. But in another sense it's a colossal failure. It also means this was the series least covered by its anime. The competition, like Bakemonogatari and SAO, at least got half of their tale animated. Fafnir got one sixth. . . Well, however you win the spot of #1, it's still #1. This is the most important thing to read out of all of Japan. I cannot recommend this story more highly.
