'In Another World With 100 Waifus' Read and Edited for the 28th time:

The final 2/5 of the book were practically flawless.  Rather than finding problems in need of correction, the only remaining edits were opportunities to add in more good stuff.  In the Wendy chapter I added a detail about her clothing, and in the 5th child runup I made a connecting reference to the beach segment.

I could probably still tighten up the number of 'justs' in the text, that's something I'll work on when I re-read this for the 29th time.  I also still need to replace the subpar Tales child names with the Tales of Arise names, which requires actually beating Tales of Arise and finding out who I like first.  Most of the children's names are fantastic.  Even in the 10th generation I was thinking to myself amazed:  'this is the 10th generation?  It might be better than the 1st!'

I worked a long time on perfecting those names so I'm glad to see this 28th readthrough was nothing but fun whenever the lists began.

Aside from these small issues, it looks like the book is in tip-top shape.  It can now be read without any worries, the difference between this 28th edition and the hypothetically slightly better future 29th edition is completely negligible:

I started this re-read in the hopes that my new knowledge of Sagiri, Elf, Iris, Mitsuki and Ai could be put to good use.  Indeed this happened, I made improvements to all those girls.  But the magical spontaneity of reading meant I also suddenly came up with new and better ideas for Mira, Mikoto, Sherria, Wendy, Cute, Misuzu, Nayuki, Illyasviel, Reina and Leia.  These are all minor edits, but there isn't a single sentence, not even a single word that doesn't matter in a book.  They can completely change your impression of the character or even the whole story.  The challenge of characterizing all 100 waifus properly is enormous, so I have no leeway to spare, it took 28 editions to get where I wanted to go with these characters.  The work of years.  The work of a lifetime.

Perhaps for my 29th readthrough I'll find even more to add, but I'm satisfied as is.  Once I got the 'justs' out of the way the book read like honey.  The erotic sections were still erotic (28th readthrough!), the girls were still cute, Christopher was still funny, and the points he made were still persuasive.  The flow of the story is perfect, events from the past affect the future in a continuous chain.  If you watch carefully enough the individual narratives of all 100 waifus play out with previous interactions affecting later interactions in the story for all of them.  If I hadn't written this book myself I would assume it could only have been written by God, that's how good it is.

And it isn't because I'm such a talented author (though that is a large part of it!), it's because I was willing to put in the work and re-read and re-edit this book 28 times over 3 years, improving it each and every time, and it's because the characters in the story are the 100 best girls ever invented by the collective genius of mankind, something I could liberally borrow from and refer back to throughout the book.  Like Newton said, if I can write far, it's only because I stand on the shoulders of giants.

In other news, the Chihayafuru scanlation has resumed.  We've finally reached the final round of the Meijin and Queen tournaments.  I'll certainly be looking forward to the climax.
