This isn't the continuation of the Unital Ring arc, it's a compendium of short stories that have already been published and translated years ago. I guess it's fine for people who don't religiously follow the series and thus were unaware of these short stories, but I'm a big fan so of course I already read them. I feel stupid to have been looking forward to this release so much. But even if you haven't read these short stories before, they're episodic and repetitive. They only say stuff we already knew, like how Kirito felt about Asuna or how Sachi felt about Kirito or whatever. They're pointless. Which is one of the major problems with short stories in the first place and why I try to avoid writing them myself. I guess the illustrations are new so you can always enjoy the pretty pictures.
SAOAGGO volume 9 also released today. At least that's real. Both volumes can be found at nyaa.si. You certainly shouldn't spend money on the ripoff that is 'Kiss and Fly.'
In other light novel news, Shinomonogatari, the conclusion to Bakemonogatari, (presumably the real conclusion this time?) is releasing in Japan August 19th. The English translation is still well behind, so who knows when we'll reach it. But this was a massive series so I'm just happy it's finished. Unlike Berserk, Wheel of Time, Zero no Tsukaima and the like, this time we'll get to see the proper fulfilment of the author's vision. 28 volumes is probably already pushing your luck, but as a result it's the best light novel series out there, which I guess makes it a worthwhile venture.
At this rate SAO is going to be even longer than Bakemonogatari, but at least Reki Kawahara is still relatively young. I love SAO but I think the series has already dragged on too long. Kirito should have jailed/killed Laughing Coffin and married Asuna by now, 'The End'. The author is prolonging the plot unnecessarily because it's popular and profitable.
