When I'm trying to purge my rankings of short anime series, it seems counterproductive to replace one short movie with another, but it's still progress in the sense that Omoi, Omoware is much better than the Nausicaa it replaces.
Omoi, Omoware can sit at rank #192 until it's time to adjust my overall rankings once more. I pretty much knew Omoi would reach my rankings if I ever got to watch it, so I was overjoyed to see it finally fansubbed. That the movie is available at nyaa.si is probably bigger news than that it reached my rankings.
Nausicaa's movie was an incomplete rendition of its manga, and the same is true of Omoi's movie. Omoi has a satisfying ending though. It doesn't feel like an insane amount of material has been left out, even though it was. A realistic romance story where no one among the main four lovers comes off as a bad guy even though there's plenty of drama. That's really threading the needle, only a master storyteller like Io Sakisaka could pull it off.
The plot was certainly satisfying, but what really impressed me was the atmosphere. I loved the art, animation, music and special effects -- bubbles, flowers, rain, bluebirds, sparkles. It felt very shoujo-manga poi. It's nice to see a shoujo manga well done enough to make my rankings because normally I'm dismissive of the genre.
When will the next great anime arrive? It might be soon, if Slime Taoshite stays as good as its first episode. Then I could replace Grave of the Fireflies too. At the latest though it will come with the summer season and the beginning of Kanojo mo Kanojo. That romance is going to be a lot more fun, though perhaps a lot less realistic, than Omoi's.
