Due to some sort of leak, nyaa.si got their hands on the Kimetsu no Yaiba movie earlier than commercial entities would have wished. It isn't the blu-ray so it doesn't look as good as blu-ray would, but it's not a camrip either, the quality is perfectly viewable. Once you get immersed in the plot any thought to how good things look disappears because the plot is what matters, and the plot is amazing.
I read the manga already and I thought this section was good but nothing special. The movie transforms that with incredible art, animation, music and voice acting into a tour de force. The fighting is brilliant and fast-paced, the feelings so strong they push through you like tides at the beach. Even though I knew what was going to happen and was sure I could handle it I ended up a teary-eyed wreck like the rest of the world audience. The power of an anime, especially a movie with unlimited budget, is so much greater than a manga. It's night and day.
Luckily Zenitsu spends most of the time asleep so we don't have to deal with his cowardly yelping. Instead we get heartrending scenes like Tanjiro reliving his time with his family and knowing he can't have that anymore. Or Tanjiro defending his family's honor. Or Tanjiro defending Rengoku's honor. Or Tanjiro pretty much doing or saying anything. Tanjiro might be the best male who has ever lived. Well, technically imagined, since he isn't real, but his life is more real to me than most real people's lives so I really don't care. The people I care about are all on the other side of that veil, and boy does this movie make me care.
It's humorous how Mortal Kombat is the best thing the west has produced in ages and all it managed was to be cool and a little funny. The martial arts and special effects really were impressive. But when you compare that to the emotion and soul and truth and beauty and strength put into this Kimetsu movie you see the infinite gulf between Japan and the west. We can't even kiss their feet. When you watch anime it transforms your spirit, when you watch Mortal Kombat you can enjoy popcorn. And when you try to watch anything else in the west you can't even do that.
Danmachi's newest oav also came out, it featured pretty girls and a bit of humor, but it too looks like a joke compared to Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Train. It's a shame it was released on the same day, now it looks so awful in comparison. >.<.
