Top Anime Rankings Adjusted:

If you haven't noticed, it's the end of the winter 2021 anime season.  This means series that just entered my rankings need to be given their *true* ranking now that all the episodes have aired and I can give a fair judgment.

For Idoly Pride the result was being kicked out of the rankings entirely, but for Uma Musume it became a literal dark horse candidate for the very top.

Uma Musume is now the 36th best anime of all time, going from completely unranked a couple months ago.  If you've seen the last episode you'll understand why.  I started crying at about halfway through the ep and never stopped until the credits rolled.

While I was at it I also adjusted many other series based on new information.  For instance, Shingeki no Kyojin announced another season so it moved up to #47.  Kimetsu no Yaiba got a new season so it moved up to #40.  Edens Zero hasn't even aired yet but I went ahead and moved it up to #44 based on the quality of the manga it will soon be adapting.

I recently rewatched Idolm@ster and it was better than I was giving it credit for so it moved up to #37.  Kobato was worse than I remembered so it moved down to #52.  Shirobako's movie was a huge disappointment so it fell to #66.  Stuff like this meant virtually every series jostled up or down at least a little.  To see the entire rankings and every little change you can always check out my top anime rankings permapost.  From there you can also check out the followup post which discusses the rankings in more detail, which has also been updated.

But basically this is a standing ovation for Uma Musume and nothing else.  I can't believe how good this series became.  I watched it years ago and thought -- hey, that was pretty good.  Now I'm stunned that the modern era can still produce things so beautiful.  This is the best new series in a long time.  The next youngest series in the rankings that are ranked higher than Uma Musume began in 2012.  I had begun to think that nothing truly good would ever come out after 2012.  But here is Uma Musume which started in 2018, and right behind it is Kimetsu no Yaiba which began in 2019.  There's still hope!
