I purchased this as soon as I could and have been reading it the last couple days. Very little happened -- everyone was forcefully teleported into a new video game and all their previous video games were erased and their progress made in them wiped. This is disastrous if you actually cared about the older games, but apparently Kirito and crew have fun playing any game together so they didn't really mind switching to this new one.
The rules are simple -- if you die in this game there's no second chance, your account is canceled, but you can still log out and live in the real world no problem. The problem I see with this is if you want to play a game with your friends or girlfriend and they die, then the game becomes completely unappealing for the survivor. I can't say whoever hijacked the world is very nice. But whatever, SAO has never been fair. At least the stupid superpowers of incarnation are all gone.
The new setting allows for new character interactions that wouldn't have occurred in the old setting -- for instance Yui is a fully playable character now. If the character interactions are charming then the books serve a purpose. I assume at some point the series will take a dark, momentous turn, but for now I guess it's about having fun. Who knows how long this Unital Ring arc will be. Hopefully not as long as Alicization. . .
The Xanth release has been delayed until February, so now I can focus on 12 Kingdoms. It's been terrible so far, all it does is completely repeat itself about information we already knew, boring us with all the problems Tai faces but not providing any solutions. I'm most of the way through the book and nothing has changed since the start of the book. Oh well, supposedly 12 Kingdoms is a good series so surely eventually it will have something interesting to say.
