The subtitles are less than ideal, but the picture quality is about as good as humanly possible. Sometimes the images are so realistic it's hard to say whether it's anime or live action anymore. I guess this is the fruit of having a movie's budget?
The plot is pretty generic, but it could have been much worse (just look at Accel World's movie), so I won't complain. The music is decent but nothing special or memorable. It's the beautiful imagery (including great new costume designs for the lead characters) and star-studded voice acting that completely carry the film. The fight with the 100th floor boss was so epic it brought a tear to my eye -- at some point things become so beautiful the human heart just overflows I guess.
The movie also promises 'more to come,' but that could be anything. A video game, a manga, a pinball machine. I want them to promise an anime adaption of Alicization. Anything short of that is just a waste of our time.
All in all, this was one of the better anime to come out this year, as expected of SAO, but it's far beneath SAO's true potential, which is when it follows the plot in the novels. SAO could be the #1 anime of all time if it just adapted Alicization. Why is it bothering with stupid halfway canon movies like these? What are they waiting for? The novels have already covered Alicization in entirety. There's nothing holding them back from an anime adaptation. It's all so stupid.
