The Long Wait September Version:

Has there been any progress in subbed anime blu-ray releases since last time I addressed the issue?

Why yes, there has!  There has also been a lot of lack of progress, but for people who have been waiting for a long time, let's go with the good news first.

The good news is that collectors now have access to subbed blu-ray quality Nisemonogatari, Steins;Gate, Zero no Tsukaima, Grave of the Fireflies and Tamayura.  Also worth noting, Yes Pretty Cure 5 has gotten all the way up to 47/49 subbed, and Yes Pretty Cure 5 GoGo has reached 28/48 subbed.  The 4th pretty cure dx movie is also out on blu-ray subs.

Also, some one-off extra episodes have been duly translated for various series, like Squid Girl and To Heart, which is always pleasant.

Now for the bad news, for these series, the long wait continues:

Fresh Pretty Cure still doesn't have a batch file, three months after the last episode was translated.

Obviously Yes Pretty Cure and Yes Pretty Cure GoGo also aren't done, even though there's at least been some progress on those fronts.

Suite Pretty Cure still isn't out on subbed blu-ray, despite Coalgirls saying they would complete it.

Shakugan no Shana III still isn't out on subbed blu-ray, despite Coalgirls saying they would complete it.

Idolmaster still isn't out on subbed blu-ray, despite Coalgirls and Doki saying they would complete it.

Nichijou still isn't out on subbed blu-ray, despite Coalgirls saying they would complete it.  (Seeing a trend here?)

Papa no Iukoto still isn't out on subbed blu-ray, despite Doki saying they would complete it.  There's at least some chance this series will be finished soon though.

And Kobato blu-ray, released last March or April, still hasn't gotten picked up by any sub group, which is mind-blowing considering what a cultural treasure it is.  The lack of Kobato blu-ray is the biggest sin I can attribute to the fansub community.  At least every other good series has, ostensibly, someone working to release it.  But as for Kobato there are only crickets.

Many good series simply aren't out on blu-ray yet, but soon will be.  This includes Haganai, Fate/Zero season 2, and Kiki's Delivery Service.  The Strike Witches movie should be coming out soon too.  But coming out soon in Japan doesn't necessarily mean it will come out soon in fansub form, as I've learned from long bitter experience.  (Yes Pretty Cure 5 is what, 6 years old now?)  While we're waiting for these remaining series to receive subs, no doubt these additional good series will also be coming out, and we can add them to the ever growing wait list, sort of like patients in the British health care system.

Still, some series have come out.  If we watch the ones that do come out, that can help us wait for those that still haven't, in a virtuous cycle.  When it comes to free fansubs, it's best to take a glass is half full view of the world.  For people who have waited half a year for their Steins;Gate or Tamayura, it's time to celebrate.  For everyone else, like Cubs fans, there's always next year.
