It's been a long time since this movie aired in Japan, but finally the outside world gets to see it too. It was excellent, albeit pointless, because the same material was covered in the first couple episodes of the regular tv series. Nevertheless, there were some true-to-the-book segments that hadn't been animated until now -- Kirito saving the exhausted Asuna in the cave, Asuna taking a bath for the first time in Aincrad, and even the dangers of those plant monsters swarming if you kill the wrong one (though in the books it was Kirito who had to deal with that trap). It was also very beautifully animated from beginning to end. That was an upgrade from the tv version as well.
As for the filler sections -- Asuna's time with Mito, going to school and eating with her family before diving into SAO -- I liked them. I love Asuna so any excuse to watch her exclusively for thirty minutes or so is welcome. If you think of it more as a window into Asuna's soul and less as 'actual events that actually happened' you can still benefit from the scenes.
I'm looking forward a lot more to SAO Progressive movie 2. There's no need for filler in that movie, it can adapt all the source work faithfully without repeating content from the earlier anime. It will be pure and perfect.
