Scarlet Nexus: A very by-the-books sci-fi story. All the classic psionic abilities are present, pyrokinesis, teleportation, precognition, telekinesis. Teams of spiffy looking suited characters go and fight mysterious incommunicative alien entities. The story practically writes itself. I don't see the point of the nth version of this same exact plot and setting. Freezing was innovative. Why not remake Freezing if you want to do a Freezing-like anime? But oh well. The art is good and there's nothing exactly offensive about the characters relying on the same patterns as ever. For a first episode this is fine. Pass.
Peach Boy Riverside: I'm fine with sex and violence, but I think it has to be tasteful. Not gratuitous or intentionally in-your-face. For instance, what kind of girl goes around wearing skin-tight pants and form-fitting shirts which look no different from out in the open breasts? All episode? As her basic normal costume? And then has a fantasy about being raped by an octopus nude on top of that? And then having people's bodies bisected and their guts spewing out blood everywhere -- couldn't they have been killed in a cleaner manner? And then there's that eerie, stupid looking bunny which is supposed to teach us racism is bad. Yes, I get it, racism is bad. No one should judge based on appearances. Blah blah blah. As though this has to be taught anymore when it's already explained every day in school, church, and the news. Down with bigotry. Bunnies should be judged by the content of their character, not the length of their ears. I get it. We all get it. So why belabor the point with such an uninteresting development? It reminds me of the preposterous story in Fortune Arterial where beautiful blonde vampires were being hunted solely for being vampires despite behaving no different from normal school girls. It's always so preposterous and stupid. No one anywhere is judged on their looks, everyone is judged on their behavior, the issue is already resolved. No vampires or bunnies will ever be unfairly harmed by the people watching this show, so why even talk about it? Fail.
Kanojo mo Kanojo: Perfect in every way. Already in my rankings, as I knew it would be a year ahead of time. The girls are even more beautiful in color than on the manga page. A sincere romantic comedy which doesn't rely on misunderstandings but complete truthfulness for its humor. A revolutionary work of transcendent glory. Pass.
Vanitas no Carte: I kind of knew this would suck before I watched it based on the preview. But I felt all the budget and talent that went into this show deserved a shot. As expected though, it was a mishmash of tired tropes and over-the-top personalities better suited to a boys-love doujinshi than a story. Boring and nonsensical as well as offputting. Fail.
Re-main: I came in expecting nothing from this series, but the first thing it does is create an interesting memory loss scenario, where everyone likes you for reasons you can no longer fathom and no longer are true about you. But the fact is they do like you for now, so if you don't disappoint them and make up the lost ground your life is made. It's a great reward for your efforts. That's certainly reason enough to try hard, even if it's at water polo. I have zero interest in this sport but the sport hasn't even shown up yet, instead it's all fun interpersonal interactions. At this rate there are no valid complaints. Pass.
Kageki Shoujo: These aren't the sort of shows I like, but I liked this show all the same. For some reason Norio Wakamoto guest starred, someone I thought was out of the voice acting business for good. Plus it's fun to see a happy-go-lucky girl disrupt the tense atmosphere of this competitive acting school. She's like a wild card. The Joker. Pass.
Bokutachi no Remake: This is a nice series where people can fantasize about redoing their life and getting what they 'deserved' all along. Obviously you deserve to live with hot college girl roommates who will instantly sleep with you so in your second life that's the first thing that happens. Pass.
Genjitsu Shugi Yuusha: This is a famous series so it should be good. A guy is summoned as a hero but ends up becoming a king and enacting political reforms to improve the economy etc. A cute twist on the genre. I recall trying out the manga and getting bored, but anime is always more compelling than manga. At least I have no complaints so far. Pass.
Tantei wa Mou, Shindeiru: I don't like reluctant heroes. I hate series that have to do drastic things to get the character motivated to engage in the plot. I want protagonists who seize their own future and excitedly jump into life. What's the point of a slug's narration? Luckily, all of this was merely a prelude and the actual plot involves the same person at a later date with, presumably, a new and better mindset. We won't know until next episode. The art and animation is very nice in this series, which gives it a bit of leeway. Otherwise I'd have already given up. Pass.
Kuro Bocchan blah blah: I couldn't finish the episode. It's not even anime, the characters are full cg at all times, and ugly as hell. Furthermore, all they do is waste their lives away doing nothing, moping about what they can't do instead of concentrating on what they can and should be doing. What a waste of time. Fail.
Seirei Gensouki: I tried the manga of this series and quickly dropped it. I can see why. It's absolutely disgusting and ridiculous for a guy to be taken into custody by the fantasy equivalent of the police with the promise that he'd be treated politely and only asked questions and then they immediately start torturing him -- and there's no reprisal for their actions even after he's freed. Especially when the guy has the power of magic to defend himself and instead allows himself to be tied up and tortured without any attempt at legitimate self-defense. If I were him I would've killed anyone who tried to touch me if it meant destroying the entire kingdom -- he has that kind of power so why didn't he use it? But whatever. Aside from that, it was a promising first episode. Cool fight scenes, a good main character who doesn't mince words, and most of all tons of extremely pretty girls. The art for this series is amazing. It's like To Love ru or something, everywhere you look, everyone you see is drop dead gorgeous. When all is said and done this is actually one of the most promising series of the season. Pass.
It's only first impressions, I try to be as forgiving as possible in order to experience any series that has a hope of being good, but this is still a great haul. Eight passing shows already. And the summer season has only begun. A Part 2 can cover the remaining ten shows that have yet to debut, but this is plenty to chew on for now.
