But upon further reflection, I spotted two good moments to fill in two plot holes, so I went ahead and at least filled them in. The first was how Lyria knew about copyright infringement to even make the great joke in the first chapter. The answer is now spelled out explicitly at the beginning of chapter 18:
"In order to allow me to flirt with my 100 waifus, Cute-sama had been kind enough to give us all an inborn universal translator. Though American in origin, I was able to speak and read Japanese without issue. If Cute-sama had been stingy I suppose she could have stopped there, but she even allowed us to understand German, French, Russian, and all the rest of mankind's tongues as well. It was due to this language assist that fantasy worlders like Lyria were instantly aware of Terran terms like copyright infringement. Most importantly, we could all understand and speak Abh, or Lafiel would have been in a real pinch. Even fantasy world languages like Myusel's were all liberally translated by our great Goddess' benevolence."
The second plot hole was how Yushis could have saved Christopher from Tifa's fists but it took Yume to save him from an assassination plot, the answer coming in the second to last paragraph of the entire novel:
"Yushis, I wanted to thank you again for saving my life." Christopher casually worked his way through the crowd to one of the independent rules judges. There are other plot holes I'm well aware of, but absent a good pacing and timing moment they're intentionally being left unfilled -- not because there's no good explanation, I actually do have them -- but simply because it's better not to bog the reader down too much with needless minutiae.
"Mama only let me intervene because it was an accident, if you actually upset Tifa there will be nothing any of us can do, so please be careful Papa." Yushis remonstrated with her mortal half.
"Does that mean I'm also immune to lightning bolts and meteorites?" Christopher asked hopefully.
"If I'm in a good mood." Yushis smiled mercurially.
"Look father!" Yukino pulled on Christopher's sleeve to get his attention and brandished three golden zodiac keys in her outstretched hand. "Mother arrived here with her ten contracted spirits, but she told me the remaining three were always meant for me. When I asked Cute-sama she assured me they were scattered somewhere across the world, so I went on a quest to find them. It took all these years, but now I can follow in Mother's footsteps!"
"That's nothing." Zack interjected. "Do you know how many materia my mother came with in her backpack? And every time she mastered one a new one was born, until the whole apartment was rolling around with them, and I got to inherit them all. . ."
"My Mother's even worse!" Selphie protested. "She's always wandering around the city looking for 'draw spots,' so we never get anywhere on time. And occasionally she'll make someone stop and perform an endless ritual on them in the middle of the street until she nods happily and proclaims '100!' It's so embarrassing!"
Ganbatte Christopher! I'm always watching you. Rin Nohara thought to herself as she watched her Hokage desperately attempting to bond with all thousand of his kids in a single day with a deep and abiding smile.
I also decided that 'I Said to Make my Abilities Average' would only ever be an average anime, due to its pernicious reliance on filler. (The same problem that doomed Negima and Rewrite). As such, there was no need to have a character from the series featured in my fictional character hall of fame, so Mile was kicked out in favor of Hazuki, the student council president from Dal Segno. Now all the Dal Segno girls are represented, which is always great because cycles cry out for completion.
Plus I cut another 'just' from the book, which is always an improvement. I've barely started my 14th re-read of the book and already found so many ways to improve the story. It's exciting how much good I can still do for this world.
I also added 'Proof Liberalism is Unsustainable' to my 'Marriage' permapost, having re-read it many times and finding the writing particularly cogent. This year it feels like everything I write deserves to be engraved on gold tablets.
