If Nobuo Uematsu's music is still good, it's incumbent upon me to track down and listen to as much of it as I can. This is, after all, the best composer in world history we're talking about. Buoyed by the wonderful Stormblood theme, I sought out the soundtrack of 'The Last Story', another of his post-Final Fantasy compositions that I'd hitherto ignored.
There weren't any tracks as iconic as, say, J-E-N-O-V-A, to be found. But this was still a fantastic soundtrack. 'A Regal Personality' was almost up there. The Last Story ended up with 34 songs added to my music hall of fame. That's better than Lost Odyssey's 31. I've heard various people say 'The Last Story' is their favorite soundtrack out of everything Uematsu has done, and I can sympathize with that. He may be old, but he's not obsolete.
Sadly, even with this infusion, Uematsu is responsible for fewer songs than Sakuraba in my hall of fame. But that doesn't reflect the level of my respect for him at all. An Uematsu song is worth three Sakuraba songs in terms of quality. Maybe someday I should try rating all my music so as to give a true approximation of every composer's worth. I could multiply the quality and quantity numbers for a scientific solution to who exactly has made music great and by exactly how much. But that's a mammoth project for another day.
