Two Anime Rankings:

As an experiment, I'm going to split my rankings in two.  The first group will contain all the series that either are finished or we have reason to believe will be finished animating from beginning to if not exactly the end at least a satisfying and acceptable end point in a watchable, high quality, non-filler fashion.  The 'finished works' rankings.  The second group will consist of the 'unfinished works' rankings.  These series are extremely promising and hold a great deal of potential, but for whatever reason were never animated all the way to the end, so most of their worth was never actually born into the world.  These are the miscarriage rankings.  The scuttled ships of animedom.  The graveyard rankings where all good series go to die.

Since the unfinished works can never reach their true, perfect forms, they can't possibly compete on a level playing field, apples-to-apples, with the finished works.  Therefore it's impossible to judge which of the two series is better because one could have a higher execution value while the other had higher latent potential.  How can you possibly decide between these two states?  It's better to just separate the two groups and only allow apples to compete with apples while oranges compete with oranges.  If I split the rankings down the middle via these two categories, what do things look like?

How to read these rankings:  Ranking - Franchise Name - Release Timeline - + indicates it is still in production, no + means there are no announced sequels to the franchise - Non-filler/watchable number of episodes/movies/specials to the franchise so far, ie, length -- story's source-- * indicates if the original source material is finished, no * means it's unfinished -- # indicates if the anime has adequately adapted its source, no # means it's not adequately adapted.

There are many ways these categories could change.  A 'finished' work could fail to secure a sequel I expected it would get, and thus suddenly become an unfinished work.  Likewise, an unfinished work could be given a satisfying conclusion and join the finished works category.  In addition, there are many borderline cases where a series may or may not be at a satisfying endpoint from a very subjective viewpoint, which could switch back or forth in my rankings at my whimsy.

Unfortunately, even breaking the rankings in two doesn't solve all problems.  A series with higher latent potential within the 'unfinished works' rankings could still be below a series with higher execution within the 'unfinished works' rankings.  For example, Negima is pretty much the worst executed anime series ever, while simultaneously having one of the highest latent potential ratings ever.  Nevertheless, it shows up at 75 in my unfinished works rankings.  Hypothetically, it could be placed first, if we're just measuring by 'in a dream world how good would this anime have been?'  However, as I'm judging anime by its worth as represented by its actual episodes existing in reality, even in the unfinished works segment, for the most part a series that is mostly finished will be far superior to one that is mostly unfinished, through no merit of whether the original concept was better or worse than the other's.  This ranking system can't eliminate all the problems of franchises being unequally adapted, but at least it can ameliorate the issue slightly better than the orthodox version, so regardless of the drawbacks it's a step in the right direction.

For a ranking system to be based on 'how good would this series be if animated in a dream world?', some conditions would have to be met that don't currently exist.  For one, all the franchises would have to be completed in terms of their source material, something which is rarely true.  Second, I'd have to have access to a translated version of said completed source material, which isn't certain even for manga.  Third, I'd have to have actually viewed/read/played said translated source material upon gaining access to it, which also isn't a guarantee.  Fourth, if we're going to go that far, what about good source material that never got an anime adaption?  Shouldn't they also appear in a 'Dream Anime Rankings' in order to be perfectly fair?  But in that case virtually anything could qualify as a 'Dream Anime,' like say Wheel of Time, and the rankings would just become pure nonsense.  Therefore, good source material without an adaption is already being discriminated against based on the 'execution' viewpoint, so it stands to reason that until every possible good source material has been adapted, a 'Dream Anime Rankings' is an impossibility.  Since none of these four conditions can be met, a 'dream anime rankings' can't even be imagined.  A 'Dream Anime Rankings' might actually be the ideal way to rank anime series, but until the preconditions are met 'execution' based anime rankings are the only possible foundation to build a structure upon.  Two categories of anime, each judged by the worth of their actual physical execution compared to other series in the same boat as they are in, is the closest compromise one can make between real and latent worth, so that's what we'll have to content ourselves with for now.
