The Top 160 Anime:

I'm tired of waiting for the third episodes of this fall season to air so I'll just expand my rankings to 160 preemptively.  The four new series that have gained entry due to this expansion are:

156. Outbreak Company (2013+)
157. Myself;Yourself (2007)
158. Shukufuku no Campanella (2010)
159. Ore no Nōnai Sentakushi ga, Gakuen Love Come o Zenryoku de Jama Shiteiru (2013+)

Outbreak Company and Noucome impressed me greatly with their initial episodes, and I'm betting they'll continue to impress in the future.  I've been wrong before, like with Suisei no Gargantia, which I eventually ended up taking back out of my rankings.  But if that happens it happens.  More likely, they'll keep up their fine pace and end up much higher than these preliminary bottom of the ladder ranks until I have the whole series to review.  The beginning of Noucome, with references to Einstein and Julius Caesar, is just too classic to ignore.  A series like that needs recognition, ASAP.  Meanwhile, Myself;Yourself is a classic love story visual novel to anime adaption from my 'Lost World' investigations, so you can just read over those reviews to find out why I cherish it.  Last but not least, Shukufuku no Campanella is another anime adaption of a Windmill Oasis visual novel, like Happiness! which came before it, so it was bound to enter my rankings sooner or later.  For that matter, Outbreak Company is by the same author as Scrapped Princess.  As the four last entries on my list (and it will be a long time before I expand again, given that I've already reviewed every anime from the past and can only expand via relying on new series in future seasons of anime from here on), these are naturally my shakiest additions.  There are arguments for many other shows that should have been included instead, but ultimately I feel like these four shows have the most potential or had the most meaningful things to say, compared to the remainder of their competition.

With the announcement of a third season of Strike Witches, I had to move up its ranking in anticipation to 50th.  Every extra episode of a series helps, especially for shorter series like Strike Witches that are still stuck at 24 eps.  Meanwhile, I knocked Kitakubu down a few slots to 92nd, because its last episodes weren't as funny as the previous ones were, whereas Kin-iro Mosaic for comparison's sake was amazing to the very end.

Now that I've expanded my rankings to 160, and won't be expanding them any further for the rest of the year, I can also point out that this fall season has produced 3 great new shows.  Overall, 2013 produced 11 new ranked shows, and provided at least some additional content for 56 ranked shows.  I believe both of those numbers are new records.  By one measure 2013 fell short, and that's in terms of creating a new series that ranked very high in the rankings, like 2012's Sword Art Online.  It failed to do that, but that's somewhat unfair, because the only reason Monogatari (14th) and Railgun (13th) are ranked so highly as they are, both ahead of Swort Art Online (15th), is because of the seasons that have aired this year in 2013 for both franchises.  In other words, 2013 has indeed produced super high quality work as well as bountiful good new installments.  When you consider how good Hunter x Hunter, Doki Doki Precure, and some other long running series have been recently as well, it all adds up to an inescapable conclusion.  2013 is the best year in anime ever.  Until, at least, 2014 rolls along.  Thanks to 2013 being such a great year, my anime rankings could grow this large without ever tapering in quality, a truly phenomenal feat.  Just consider that Saint Tail and Howl's Moving Castle still haven't managed to reenter my rankings, despite being there in the past.  This means that there were more good series released in 2013 than slots opened up via watching mediocre series.  In other words, the rankings are far more competitive now, at 160, than they used to be at 80 or whatever in the past.  That's sick!  It just shows how far anime has come.  It just shows what an amazing year this has been for the whole industry -- and looking at the sales for shows like Shingeki no Kyojin, the consumers agree with me.  This is, quite simply, a year to remember.
