I've said before and I'll say it again, this has been my favorite season of anime ever. So many good shows were airing simultaneously, and so many long-running shows were airing their best parts, all at once, that it felt like every day was Christmas. But according to Newton's law of physics, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Namely, with the winter season ending this March, we're about to receive a body blow.
Everything is ending. Not just one or two series. All of them. Recall how we had over twenty shows to watch this winter? Well, when all this is over we'll only have 4. That's right, only One Piece, Pretty Cure, Chihayafuru and Hunter x Hunter are continuing into the next season.
Naruto has gone into filler again.
Fairy Tail has been canceled.
Ginga e Kickoff is over.
Two Season Series that started in Fall all end this spring:
Robotics;Notes
Little Busters
Bakuman
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
Shin Sekai Yori
One Season Series all end this spring:
Yama no Susume
Mangirl
Love Live
Oreshura
AKB0048
Da Capo
Vividred Operation
Tamako Market
Haganai
We've lost 18 shows. There's no way in hell the spring anime season has 18 anime series worth watching that could replace all these losses. It's just devastation.
In the spring, in exchange, we get:
Probably-Filler Hayate
Oreimo
Railgun
2 eps of Girls und Panzer
and maybe good?:
Date A Live
Aku Hana
Shingeki no Kyoujin
Yuyushiki
Aiura
Photo Kano
Red Data Girl
Yahari
Valvrave
Majestic Prince
Gargantia
Supposing every single one of these series were good, adding in the four carry-overs from this season, we would only get 19 watchable shows. But it's doubtful even half of these shows will be good. Hayate filler isn't much to get excited about, and 2 episodes of Girls und Panzer hardly counts as a season. The real spring season will look something like this:
One Piece
Pretty Cure
Hunter x Hunter
Chihayafuru
Oreimo
Railgun
Shingeki no Kyoujin
Wheee. Seven shows. 1/3 as good as this winter. Can we skip ahead to the summer season already? At least then we'll have Sailor Moon. . .
On the bright side, many of these shows that are ending are ending at the actual ending, not in the middle -- Ginga e Kickoff, Bakuman, AKB0048, Love Live, Vividred Operation, Tamako Market and Robotics;Notes should all have definitive endings. Though I wouldn't be surprised if Love Live, AKB0048 and Vividred Operation all had sequels sometime down the road, they will at least have closure of their present storylines. As such, some of my ranked series will go from * to non-*, having officially completed their missions in life. This is something to celebrate, not mourn. Nothing perfects a good series like actually reaching an ending. Bakuman, especially, is a very happy moment. 72 episodes with a definitive ending? Such a thing has never happened in anime before. Length + Closure = Greatness.
