Republicans Are Liberals Because the Electorate is Liberal:

A lot of people on the far right blogosphere have a hard time understanding why Mitt Romney would make a speech to the NAACP.  They ask with apparent confusion:  "Doesn't Romney know that he's expected to receive only around 1% of the black vote?  What good does it do to pander to blacks?"

This is completely missing the point.  Romney isn't pandering to blacks by making a speech to the NAACP, nor is he pandering to minorities by getting a woman or non-white Vice Presidential nominee.  He is pandering to the whites in the Republican party who abhor all forms of racism, sexism, homophobia, anti-semitism, nationalism, etc.  This is the vast majority of the Republican party, at least 90% of Republican voters would never be caught dead saying they wish to treat people unequally.  Romney must reassure these people that he, too, wishes to treat everyone equally, as individuals, without any prejudice and with a clear and fair eye for each and every individual.  Romney is pandering to the vast majority of Republicans who would otherwise run away screaming from the Republican party, if they ever thought for even half a second that the Republican party might be racist, sexist, etc.

The point of nominating a woman or minority vice presidential nominee is to show that Republicans are a party of values, not favored demographic groups.  Anyone who shares Mitt Romney's values is welcome to be in his party.  This does not mean he thinks many blacks, single women, gays, jews, hispanics, Asians, and Amerindians are jumping at the chance to share in Romney's, or the Republican Party's values.  He isn't trying to get their vote in the first place.  He's trying to get the vote of people who do share his values, but also hold the liberal belief in universal equality and a hatred for all forms of discrimination, which would be a show-stopper if any Republican ever violated this moral norm.

There are only a few safe things a Republican can do to appeal to white people without turning off the white liberal-minded vote, which would end up destroying the Republican party and leaving some shattered remnant that would only receive 1% of the vote.  Republicans could change immigration from a mindless diversity lottery system to a meritocratic points based system, like our neighbors have done in Canada.  They could stop illegal immigration.  They could get rid of affirmative action.  All of these policies could be asserted in the interests of universal fairness and equality before the law.  As such, these policies aren't suspect and even if Democrats say they are racist, the Republican values but liberal in terms of hating discrimination Republicans will simply deny its racist and insist it's about fairness.

Being accused of racism is to be expected.  Everyone is accused of racism at all times about everything.  Opposing socialized medicine is racist.  Every Republican knows it's par for the course to be accused of racism.  But it would be a kiss of death to actually ENDORSE racism.  No Republican voters wish to actually be racist, they just want to be fair and equal towards all, in such a way that promotes individual responsibility and meritocratic hierarchies.  It's okay to curtail illegal immigration in the name of the rule of law, but to do so 'for the sake of white people' would destroy the party overnight -- practically no one would ever vote for the Republican party again.

Therefore the far right is completely off base when they say things like, 'Republicans should stop trying to please minorities and start striving to please whites, who are still the majority of Americans after all.'  Republicans have been trying to please whites, and only whites, all along.  They know who their voters are and they know they'll never win the black vote.  But it's important to show that you wish blacks well in order to appeal to white voters, who are themselves non-racist and anti-racist.  The best way to appeal to white voters is to show how non-racist and moral and fair you are.  This is the only way Republicans can hope to win an election.

The only way we'll ever escape from the rut of public opinion -- the demand that everything be non-discriminatory, is for science to prove conclusively that inequality in outcomes is due to unequal genes.  At that point a paradigm shift will occur on par with the advent of Darwin's theory of evolution.  Since this is the truth, it's only a matter of time until scientists prove it true.  The alternative is for liberal policies to drive the world into total ruin, which might cause a few people to wonder if maybe they were wrong about this whole anti-racism thing.  However, that 'cure' is worse than the disease, so it's fruitless wishing for the end of the world like that.  Just to drive the point home, the conditions of Zimbabwe and South Africa have not been enough to change people's minds about anti-racism, therefore for a 'collapse' scenario to work, it would have to bring civilization to a point even lower than both of those states, before liberals would even start to think of having regrets.  Such a threshold is so low that it may be impossible to recover from, or it may take thousands of years.  This world is better than something worse than Zimbabwe, therefore it's useless wishing for calamities in order to improve liberals' views on race.  The tradeoff is just too expensive.

What I'd rather do is simply let liberalism have its way on everything unopposed.  Once the liberals lose the excuse of Republican opposition causing their beautiful dream like visions to fail, because there is no opposition and they have complete dictatorial power over everything, then their policies would have to succeed or fail on their own merit.  Only by completely fulfilling every possible excuse liberals currently have, and showing that not one of their policies helps in the least, could liberals be convinced that their policies are wrong and conservatives were right all along.  We will win by order of elimination.  If people think blacks suck because of poverty, we should let them give every black a million dollars and see what happens.  If they think blacks suck because of racism, we should give blacks control of every business and every political position so that no possible oppressor could possibly hurt blacks 'institutionally' any more.  And so on.  The best way to defeat liberalism would be to stop propping up their delusions by giving them imaginary activities we still haven't 'tried' yet.  If blacks suck because they aren't receiving a proper education, then educate them any way liberals like with as much money as they like.  Ten million dollars a student for all I care.  Just so long as we can definitively prove education is not the answer and it must be something else, it would be easily worth the price.

However, global solutions like these are kind of pointless anyway.  It would be much better for racists to give up on the vast majority of the population, all of which is too delusionally liberal to have any saving value, and instead try to build a more compact, insular community that takes care of itself.  So long as racists can find mates, get jobs, and prosper in America while actually being able to tell the truth and live as they like, like themselves, then what do we care what happens in big cities far away from home?  If racists created a network, like the mormon church did or Jews did, that services each other, then they wouldn't need to change the country as a whole.  They could just serve each other with good private schools, high paying jobs, proper preaching at church every weekend, and so on.  But because racists are too few in numbers, they can't even achieve this tiny, easily accomplished goal that Amish do every day.

Racists will never have the power to change America, they can't even build a small town meant only for themselves.  So the best they can do is go about their daily lives, swallow the daily humiliation and stupidity of the outside world, keep true to themselves in their hearts, and pretend to follow the liberal orthodoxy outwardly in every particular, even among family and friends.  Eventually science will prove us right and the world will change even without our intervention.  Before then there's nothing we can do, so there's no point doing anything, saying anything, voting for anyone, joining any organization, or making any stand.  It's all completely pointless because racists, sexists, etc are a despised minority with no power.  They're even worse off than atheists were under Medieval Christian rule.  The sooner they realize this, the sooner they can duck their heads, stay meek and quiet, and get on with their lives.
