By rewatching Fate/Stay Night and Fate/Unlimited Blade Works side by side I've come to the conclusion that the first seven episodes of Fate/Stay Night (the original 2006 series) are essentially filler. UBW covers the same material in greater depth and better detail, leaving no room for Stay Night's episodes to share the limelight.
Yes there are some small differences between the two during those seven eps but they don't justify watching the entire ep when most of the material is still overlapping line for line. Only with episode 8 of Fate/Stay Night do things take a dramatic enough turn to justify watching both series instead of just UBW.
This reduces my great anime count by 7, but if it helps others enjoy a more streamlined Fate experience into the future it's all for the better.
